HERMANOS DE LUNA Y SOL
The concept of Hermanos de Luna y Sol was created by Dr. Rafael M.
Diaz, a professor of Ethnic Studies and Director of the Cesar Chavez
Institute at the San Francisco State University (SFSU). Since 1995,
Hermanos de Luna y Sol has served as one of the most powerful tools
for HIV prevention in the Hispanic gay and bisexual community. It has
been helping its participants to increase their self-esteem and it
helps them to regain control of their life.
The Utah AIDS Foundation has adapted this program for the gay and
bisexual Hispanic community in Utah. The image of Hermanos de Luna y
Sol is represented by two entwined hands forming our planet.
The concept of the image invites participants to consider the spiritual
connection they have as human beings. By the same token it suggests
that the world is formed by hands working together. The name, "Brothers of the Moon and the Sun,"
indicates the connection with the
power of the sun and the moon just like their ancestors found a
spiritual connection with the god of the sun and the god of the moon.
The participants are connected in one way or another and they come from the same roots; they are Latinos and they carry the same blood; they are linked with their past, among themselves, with their future; they are part of the power that ruled the day and the night among the ancient inhabitants of America. They are hermanos,
Hermanos de luna y sol
... talking among themselves!
