FACTS ABOUT HIV AND AIDS

  • In the United States, HIV/AIDS is one of the main causes of death among people between the ages of 25 and 44.
  • The majority of new cases of HIV/AIDS are diagnosed among men having sex with men who belong to ethnic minorities.
  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
  • The virus can be transmitted through four human fluids: blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk.
  • The majority of the HIV-positive people acquire HIV from having vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact. The virus can also be transmitted when sharing needles or syringes with someone who is HIV-positive.
  • When people acquire HIV, the virus attacks the immune system (the system that defends against diseases).
  • People can seem and feel healthy for years while they are infected with HIV. They might not know they are infected and even though they may not look or feel sick, they may infect others.
  • HIV symptoms may vary from person to person and may look like those of common illnesses. Symptoms cans include swollen glands, fever, and diarrhea.
  • Only an HIV test can indicate if a person is infected. The tests look for the specific antibodies to the virus. These tests are more than 99% accurate.
  • It can take up to six months from the moment of infection until antibodies can be detected in a person. For this reason, if the person has been recently infected, the test might not detect the infection, and follow-up testing would be recommended.
  • It could take more than 10 years for an HIV-positive person to develop AIDS. People develop AIDS when their immune system deteriorates so much that it cannot fight against diseases and infections that healthier people could resist easily. These diseases and infections could be lethal when people are diagnosed with AIDS.
  • Only a doctor can diagnose a person with AIDS.
  • There is no medication to prevent HIV infection and/or cure AIDS.
